Cervical Mucus Fluid (CM or CF):

You may have noticed already that sometimes you have some fluid on the toilet paper when you wipe. Sometimes it is sticky, other times creamy or clear and slippery, and occasionally tinged with a little pink, brown or red blood. These are normal changes indicating fertility.

You will notice that this fluid progresses from sticky to creamy to very slippery, egg white-quality. The wetter and more slippery the CM, the more fertile you are. You are most fertile on the last day of egg white cervical mucus or slippery vaginal sensation.

Try to check CM a couple of times a day, and note the wettest-quality CM that you observe in any one day.

Some women never experience egg white cervical mucus; if you don't, you can still get pregnant. Just remember that you are most fertile on the day of the wettest-quality CM that YOU have.

Check your CM internally (insert 2 fingers into your vagina) or externally; just try to be consistent in one cycle (only checking internally or externally). Also if you have trouble finding CM on the outside, internal checking may be for you.

Cervical Position (CP):
This is an optional fertility tracking sign. It is most useful if your CM and temperature are a little confusing in a given cycle. Normally, your cervix will be low, hard and closed after your period and also after ovulation. When you are fertile (just before ovulation) it will become Soft, High, Open and Wet (SHOW).

It is easiest to check CP while squatting or with one foot on the toilet or tub. Make sure your hands are clean. Insert 2 fingers into your vagina. Your cervix feels a little like the tip of your nose. Notice its general position, hardness or softness, what the opening feels like, etc. Record your observations on your chart.

CP can be frustrating to check at first but once you get used to it you'll find it is really helpful.

CM, CP & BD:
As a general rule, you are fertile every day that you have fertile-quality CM, with egg white cervical mucus being the most fertile, if you have it. If your CP is high and open, that is another sign. Some people choose to have intercourse every day that they see fertile CM; others every other day. If your partner's sperm count is normal, just do what seems right for you. If he has a low sperm count, you will probably need to determine how many days of fertile CM you usually have and try to time intercourse to coincide with your most fertile days.

Help! I don't think I have enough Cervical Fluid!:
There are several ways to help improve your CM: first, make sure you drink at least 8 glasses of water per day. Limit caffeine as it is a diuretic (dries you up). Some women have reported success in increasing CM by taking plain Robitussin--or generic-brand---for a few days prior to O. Follow the instructions on the package. Other women have seen improvements by taking Evening Primrose Oil or even eating more carrots (Vitamin A).
