Home Pregnancy Test (HPTs)

When can I test?
See below for more information (HPTs and their sensitivity). Some women have positive results from HPTs anywhere from 10 to 18 or more days past ovulation(DPO). So while you may be tempted to test at 12 days past ovulation, realize that you might see a negative result only because you tested too early. Remember, it's not over 'till your period shows!

Pregnancy Symptoms or PMS??
Unfortunately for women who are TTC, early pregnancy symptoms are very similar to PMS. This is because our LPs are supported by Progesterone, which is also the hormone that sustains an early pregnancy.

Some women feel symptoms and are not pregnant; others feel nothing and are. It's good to be aware of your normal PMS symptoms so that if you experience something new, or your PMS symptoms are absent, you will notice.

That said, here are some reported symptoms of early pregnancy:

Symptom Time Range Reported
Sore breasts (sides, all over, or nipples only) 2-3 DPO to AF due date
Light spotting (implantation on uterine wall) 5 DPO to AF due date
Nausea usually after implantation
Fatigue 5 DPO to Mensus due date

HPTs and their sensitivity

Most HPT manufacturers claim that their tests will register positive as early as 1 day after period is due. That one statement assumes a lot! It assumes that the woman knows when she ovulated, so truly *knows* when period is due. It assumes that the woman has approximately a 14+ day LP. It assumes that implantation occurred earlier rather than later during the LP. It assumes that the HcG levels are within a certain range. Keep in mind that HcG, the hormone detected by HPTs is produced en masse once the fertilized egg implants into the uterine lining. This can occur anywhere from approximately 6dpo until as late as 12dpo with 14dpo not unheard of.

Woman 1 - Implantation at 6dpo. 14 day luteal phase so AF due 15dpo. Tests 16dpo. Body has had 10 days to build up HcG.

Woman 2 - Implantation at 9dpo. 12 day luteal phase so AF due 13dpo. Tests 14dpo. Body has had 5 days to build up HcG.

Obviously Woman 1 has a much better chance of testing positive one day after AF is due than Woman 2. And even if Woman 2 tests at 16 dpo like Woman 1, she has still only had 7 days verses Woman 1's 10 days of HcG production. And keep in mind that these two women's bodies will not produce HcG at the same rates.

You'll see that the ranges overlap greatly! What is normal for one woman at 14 dpo is also normal for another woman at 9dpo and a third woman at 20dpo.
