Some women choose to use an OPK along with
CM and Basal Body Temperature(BBT) charting in order to pinpoint
ovulation. OPKs are available at most pharmacies, and online.
They cost from $12 to $35 for 5 to 9 days' worth of tests.
We sell them for $9.75/5
tests
OPKs work by detecting the surge in Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
that normally occurs 12 to 40 hours prior to Ovulation. Unlike
HPTs, the test line has to be as dark or darker than the control.
Start testing about 5 days before you expect to Ovulate (women
with long cycles, wait until you see fertile-quality CM) and
stop testing once you get a + result. The day after a + result
may well show no line whatsoever, since LH surges and then
pretty much disappears.
OPKs detect the LH surge but the only way to confirm that
you have ovulated is by charting your temperature. Occasionally
a woman will have an LH surge but no Ovulation, so it is important
to watch for that temp shift. If you find that your OPK is
always +, ask your Doctor to run some blood tests to check
your hormone levels.
Finally, one successful client was told by her Doctor to
use OPKs this way: test in the afternoon, between noon and
8 PM. Once you detect the surge, have intercourse that night,
the following night, and the morning after that. She conceived
that cycle. (This assumes a normal
sperm count. If low, you may want to wait until 12 hours
after you detect the surge).
