Women's Fertility
A woman's cycle consists of 4 stages; AF (period), the Follicular
Phase (FP), when an egg has matured in the ovaries, Ovulation, and
the Luteal Phase (LP), the time between Ovulation and your period.
Conception occurs most often if intercourse is timed between 1 and
5 days prior to Ovulation.
The egg is viable for 12 to 24 hours after release; a man's sperm
can last up to 5 days in fertile-quality Cervical Fluid. Therefore
using the FAM method to determine when your Cervical Fluid is fertile
is crucial in helping you conceive your baby.
On average, women's cycles range from 24-40 days in length. Most
of us were taught to believe that ovulation happens on Day 14, or
roughly the middle of our cycle. This is a misconception. In fact,
the length of the Follicular Phase varies from one woman to another
(or from one cycle to the next, depending on stress, illness, etc.)
but the Luteal Phase is always 10-16 days. So a woman with a 28-day
cycle and 14-day LP does indeed ovulate on Day 14, the middle of
her cycle. But a woman with a 25-day cycle might ovulate on day
12 and have a 13-day LP. For her, intercourse on Day 14 would be
too late to conceive. Likewise, a woman with a 35-day cycle and
11-day LP does not ovulate until Day 24, a full 10 days after the
mythical Day 14 and nowhere near the middle of her cycle. All of
these are samples of "normal" cycles; with FAM, you will
discover what is normal for you.
